Introduction

British Gymnastics England is a wholly owned subsidiary of British Gymnastics and trades under the name Gymnastics England (GE). Gymnastics England is the organisation charged by British Gymnastics and Sport England for delivering each of their respective outcomes from the Whole Sport Plan for gymnastics in England 2009-2013. GE works directly with the England regions and clubs.

Background

The English Gymnastics Association (EGA) was originally formed in 1982 by the English regions to ensure that England was represented in the Commonwealth Games and other International events. The EGA was given the delegated authority (by British Gymnastics) to oversee the management of the Whole Sport Plan for the period 2005-2009. However, due to changes in the sporting landscape and the funding conditions for sport in England, Gymnastics England has been set up to manage the Whole Sport Plan (WSP) for Gymnastics in England 2009-2013.

British Gymnastics (BG) remains the National Governing Body for gymnastics in England and as such will maintain its status as the accountable body responsible for ensuring the delivery of the WSP for gymnastics in England. British Gymnastics has set up Gymnastics England as the mechanism to deliver the WSP for England and is considered by Sport England, as the most effective structure to deliver the plan on behalf of British Gymnastics, whilst still maintaining an England identity. From 1st April 2009, Gymnastics England was made responsible for the implementation of the Whole Sport Plan for Gymnastics in England 2009-2013. Gymnastics England will work hand in hand with British Gymnastics and all other available partners to ensure the necessary resources are available to deliver all aspects of the WSP in England.

In summary Gymnastics England is the professional body that will deliver the Whole Sport Plan, together with those aspects of gymnastics outside of the role of the EGA, including the technical development of the talent pathway, via a team of professional, paid staff. The English Gymnastics Association is a volunteer body affiliated to BG and recognised by BG as responsible for the Commonwealth Games and English Championships.

Gymnastics England will work specifically with the EGA to support these ‘English’ representative opportunities.
