‘On The Rebound’ in Leicestershire PDF Print E-mail
Secondary school children from around Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland were bouncing around on Thursday 14th January 2010.  The pupils were attending a trampoline competition dedicated to secondary schools, being held at New College, Leicester.

The competition had been the first of its kind for many years in the local area and was organised by the Leicester-Shire & Rutland Schools Gymnastics Development Group.  The group was set up to develop gymnastics opportunities within schools and 2009 saw the first Inter School Sports Partnerships competition for Key Step Gymnastics for key stage 1, 2 & 3; a competition that was very successful and saw all 10 Leicestershire and Rutland districts represented.

The trampoline competition held on the 14th January saw teams travelling from Leicester city, South Charnwood, Hinckley & Bosworth, Blaby & Harborough and Rutland.  Not all the young people from these areas were competing; a few students had been trained to judge the trampoline routines on a special course and were officiating at the event.  Judging Controller and judge trainer Peter Heames was delighted to see young people getting involved in these roles and when talking about the young judges said that this was,

“The absolute biggest plus from my perspective”

The competition was split into two levels, with a team trophy for each level and individual medals for the top three boys and girls at each level.  The team results were:

o    Level 2

o    Level 2 Team Trophy Winners -     Lancaster School Sports Partnership
o    Level 2 2nd place -            Crown Hills School Sports Partnership
o    Level 2 3rd place -             Rutland School Sports Partnership

o    Level 2

o    Level 3 Team Trophy Winners -     Blaby & Harborough School Sports Partnership
o    Level 3 2nd place -            Rutland School Sports Partnership
o    Level 2 3rd place -             South Charnwood School Sports Partnership

All the children who attended the contest were enthusiastic and competed extremely well; especially as taking part in a trampoline competition was a completely new experience for them.  Rutland team manager, Amanda Mathers, said,

“ The children had a great time, they really enjoyed it.”

The Leicester-shire & Rutland Schools Gymnastics Development Group are now looking forward to the ‘Key Step’ gymnastics competition for the younger age groups in spring, but they will be back next year with the 2nd trampoline competition and hope it will be an even bigger event next time.
